Victoria Falls Whitewater Rafting on the Zambezi River
An Unforgettable Whitewater Adventure in Victoria Falls Zimbabwe
Victoria Falls whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River ranks among Africa's most sought-after adventure experiences, and Mpala is the operator run by guides who grew up on this water. From family-friendly Class I and II runs starting at age 7, to full Class V expeditions spanning up to eight days, Mpala covers the full range. The operation runs year round, adapting start and end points to the Zambezi's seasonal conditions so you can book in any month.
Visiting during the rainy season or heard the river “closes”?
Find out why we run year-round.

The Zambezi's Rapids
The Batoka Gorge section of the Zambezi runs 26 rapids through an 800-metre canyon below Victoria Falls. The rapids are numbered sequentially from the put-in point below the falls, and different trips access different sections depending on water levels and how far downstream you travel.
At the gentler end, Class I and II rapids are where families and first-timers start. Clear channels, continuous movement, and enough going on to keep you busy without putting you at risk. The family-friendly option starts at Rapid 11, which skips the intense upper gorge section entirely.
The full gorge experience reaches Class V: powerful, technical rapids that demand real attention. These are the rapids that built the Zambezi's reputation, and what Mpala's guides have spent their careers running.
Whatever section you run, the gorge stays the same: 800-metre canyon walls, one of the most dramatic river corridors in Africa.
when is zambezi river rafting open?
Every month of the year. Mpala adapts departure points and route to match seasonal water levels, so there's no closed season on the water.
High Water Season (February through July)
The river runs full and fast in these months. The falls are at their most dramatic, the gorge walls are green, and the rapids carry serious volume. This is what most people picture when they think of Zambezi rafting. Loud water, strong current, and a river that earns its reputation on every run.
Low Water Season (August through January)
When the river drops, the gorge opens up differently. Rock formations that stay submerged in high water become visible, and sight lines through the canyon are clearer. Routes in these months often run further upstream, which means more time on the water. This window also overlaps with the dry season, when wildlife across the Victoria Falls area is most active.
Pick dates that work for your trip. If you want a straight recommendation for your specific group, reach out to the team before you book. They've run the river in every month of the year.
Which Rafting Trip Is Right for You?
Mpala runs seven rafting options on the Zambezi, from a single day to an eight-day expedition.
Family Friendly Full-Day Rafting
Class I and II rapids only, starting at Rapid 11. The water moves and the day is full, but the rapids don't carry the consequence of the upper gorge. Good for anyone new to the river or travelling with kids. Ages 7 and up, $170 per person.
Full-Day Rafting
Covers the Batoka Gorge including the more challenging rapids. No prior experience needed. Your guides handle the technical decisions, and this is the version that earns the stories. Ages 7 and up, $170 per person.
Rafting and Camping Adventure
Raft the Zambezi, camp overnight in the Batoka Gorge on a white sand beach, and come out the next morning. Not many places let you spend a night on the river. Ages 7 and up, $450 per person.
Overnight Rafting and Fishing
A full day on the Zambezi combined with an overnight and fishing. The Zambezi is one of Africa's great fishing rivers, and this trip gives you both the rapids and the quiet. Ages 8 and up, $450 per person.
2.5, 5, or 8-Day Rafting Adventures
Multi-day trips that go deep into the Batoka Gorge, camping on the river and covering sections that day-trippers never reach. The 2.5-day is a good entry into expedition rafting ($900). The 5-day goes further ($1,800). The 8-day is the full journey ($2,725). All open from age 7.
Guides and Kayakers Special
Discounted access to the Zambezi for working guides and kayakers. Trips from one to seven days, $125 to $875. Ages 19 and up.
