Is Rafting Open on the Zambezi River?

Kate Bauman • March 31, 2026

YES! RAFTING IS OPEN ALL YEAR. We Never Really Close.

Rafting the Zambezi High water March 30th

If you’ve been Googling whether Zambezi River rafting is open, or if a travel agent told you the river is closed for the season, we’re here to set the record straight.

Try Rafting is open. We’re on the water. And we want you out here with us.

Why You Might Hear “Rafting Is Closed”

The Zambezi is one of the most powerful rivers in the world. Water levels fluctuate dramatically throughout the year, and when the river runs high, some sections become unraftable. Many operators respond to this the same way they always have: they shut down, hang up the paddles, and wait for conditions to change.

That’s not how we do things.

When conditions shift, we shift with them. Instead of closing, we assess the river, identify where the best (and safest) rafting is happening, and move downstream to meet it. The Zambezi is a long river with a lot of character. There’s almost always a stretch worth running, and we know how to find it.

We Monitor Water Levels. Constantly.

Safety is not a footnote for us. It’s the foundation of every single trip we run.

Our team monitors water levels daily. We track the river’s behavior, study how it’s changing, and make informed decisions about which sections are appropriate for our guests. Before any trip launches, we’ve already assessed the current, the rapids, and the conditions downstream.

This means two things for you: you are in safe hands, and there is almost always a way to get you on the water.

We don’t gamble with the river. We read it, and we plan accordingly.

Zambezi Rafting Conditions Month by Month

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Zambezi is that there is a single "rafting season." The reality is much more interesting. The river changes dramatically throughout the year, creating different experiences depending on when you visit.

January

The rainy season is in full swing, and water levels are typically rising. Conditions can change quickly, which is why we monitor the river closely and adjust our trips accordingly.

February

Water levels continue to increase as rains fall throughout the Zambezi catchment. Expect a powerful river, fewer crowds, and a unique high-water rafting experience.

March

March often marks the beginning of the highest water levels of the year. Some traditional rafting sections may become inaccessible, but this is where our adaptive approach allows us to continue finding exciting stretches of river to run.

April

The river is usually at or near peak flow. This is when many people hear rumors that "rafting is closed." In reality, we're actively scouting, adapting, and operating where conditions allow.

May

Water levels begin to stabilize, although they can still remain high. Depending on conditions, rafting opportunities continue to evolve as the river transitions toward the dry season.

June

The dry season arrives, bringing cooler temperatures and increasingly consistent river conditions. This is a fantastic time to be on the water.

July

July is one of the most popular months for visitors to Victoria Falls. Comfortable weather, clear skies, and reliable rafting conditions make it a favorite among adventure travelers.

August

The river continues to offer excellent rafting opportunities. Cooler mornings give way to warm days, creating ideal conditions for a full day on the Zambezi.

September

Many rafters consider September one of the best months of the year. Water levels are often ideal, temperatures are warm, and the rapids are at their most famous.

October

October brings hot weather and exciting low-water conditions. The rapids are big, technical, and incredibly rewarding for adventure seekers.

November

As temperatures remain high and the first rains begin to arrive, the river starts its annual transition. Rafting remains available while conditions gradually evolve.

December

Early summer storms return to the region, bringing fresh energy to the river. Every trip is different, and our guides continuously assess conditions to ensure the best possible experience.

So, When Is the Best Time to Raft the Zambezi?

The honest answer: there isn't just one best month.

If you're looking for powerful high-water adventures, the rainy-season months can be incredible. If you want classic Zambezi rapids and warm, dry weather, the middle of the year is hard to beat. And if you're after legendary low-water runs, late dry season often delivers some of the most exciting rafting on the planet.

No matter when you visit, our goal remains the same: find the best section of river available, operate safely, and give you an unforgettable day on the Zambezi.

What “Creative Rafting” Actually Means

When we say we take a creative approach, we mean we refuse to treat the river like a fixed experience that only works under perfect conditions.
Other operators run the same section, every time, and when that section isn’t available, the answer is no. Our answer is: let’s find a better question.
We scout. We adapt. We choose the sections where the water is working in our favor, where you get the rush, the scenery, the Zambezi experience you came for, without compromising on safety. Sometimes that means adjusting our put-in point. Sometimes it means running a different stretch entirely. The result is the same: you’re on one of the greatest rivers in Africa, and you’re having the time of your life.

The Evidence Is in the Water

Every day we operate, we document it. Videos. Photos. Trip logs. Happy, soaking-wet clients.

If you’re a travel agent, tour operator, or adventure company and you want proof that we’re running trips while others are sitting on the shore, we’ll send it straight to your inbox. We want you to know that the Zambezi is alive, the rapids are waiting, and the doors are open.
