Victoria Falls hiking takes you somewhere most visitors never go: inside the Batoka Gorge. While the crowds gather at the viewpoints above, Mpala's guided hikes drop into the canyon itself, 800-metre walls on both sides, lush gorge vegetation, and the Zambezi running along the floor below. Three hikes are available, from a half-day bush picnic to an overnight camp on the canyon floor. All are rated medium difficulty and open from age 7.

The Batoka Gorge

The Batoka Gorge is the canyon carved by the Zambezi River directly below Victoria Falls. The terrain is dramatic: steep descent paths, exposed rock, and dense riverine vegetation along the gorge floor. On clear days, the mist rising from the falls is visible above the canyon rim.

This is not a maintained tourist trail. The gorge is remote, the paths require attention, and the wildlife is real. The guides who lead you through it grew up in this landscape. That local knowledge is what makes the hike worth doing.

Victoria Falls Batoka Gorge Hike and Bush Picnic

The flagship day hike. Four hours in the gorge with a bush picnic included. Dramatic cliffs, lush vegetation, and wildlife along the canyon floor. Ages 7 and up, $120 per person.

Sunset Hike, Batoka Gorge

Same terrain, different light. The gorge walls change colour as the sun drops, and the hike finishes with dinner. Four hours, ages 7 and up, $175 per person.

Batoka Gorge Hiking and Camping Adventure

For those who want to stay. The hike takes you into the gorge, then you camp overnight on the canyon floor beside the Zambezi on a white sand beach. Morning on the river before you come out. One day, ages 7 and up, $175 per person.
