What is the Batoka Gorge hike?
The Batoka Gorge hike is a scenic and adventurous guided hike into the dramatic basalt gorge below Victoria Falls. The trail offers steep descents, sweeping views of the Zambezi River, and close-up encounters with the gorge’s rugged landscape.
How difficult is the Batoka Gorge hike?
The difficulty depends on the route you choose. There are two hiking options available:
Hard track: A challenging hike descending into the gorge with a vertical elevation change of approximately 700 feet (213 meters) down and back up. This option is physically demanding.
Easy track: A gentler hike along the upper rim of the gorge, designed for guests who want scenic views without a steep descent.
Do I need hiking experience?
Previous hiking experience is helpful but not required. The terrain can be steep and uneven, especially on the hard track, but experienced guides assist throughout the hike. Most reasonably fit guests can complete their chosen route.
How long does the hike take?
The hike typically takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the route selected, group pace, and time spent enjoying views and taking photos.
What fitness level is required?
Good general fitness is recommended. Guests with knee issues, balance concerns, or difficulty with steep climbs may find the hard track challenging and may prefer the easy rim walk instead.
Is the Batoka Gorge hike safe?
Yes, when done with experienced guides. Trails are steep but manageable, and guides closely monitor conditions, heat levels, and guest safety. Extra caution is required near cliff edges and loose terrain.
How hot does it get in the gorge?
Temperatures can rise quickly, especially deeper in the gorge. Morning hikes are recommended for cooler conditions, and staying hydrated throughout the hike is essential.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip and lightweight, breathable clothing. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a small daypack. Guides will advise you on conditions before the hike.
